For this, you’ll require:

  • Blank leather belt

  • Leather stamps
  • Leather Mallet
  • Stylus 5. Leather Dye
  • Nylon or Synthetic Polyester Thread
  • Hammer Holste

Steps:

  • Clean the dirt and debris from the surface. Wipe it with a wet cloth.
  • Sand the leather with sand paper if they feel rough or uneven. Don’t make it too thin as it will tear up due to your tools’ weight.
  • Put your leather belt in water and let it soak the water for 30 minutes or more. But don’t let it soak more than an hour. If you do so, the leather will become dump and you won’t be able to craft the designs properly.
  • Dye the leather if you want. If you are going to use it with your jeans, give it a wooden texture. But for other pants, any dark color would do the work.
  • Decide how you are going to make your belt look. You can add shapes or text to design the belt. After you decide, cut papers according to the design if you want to paint the design. But if you want to craft the design, you can do it by scratching the leather surface or burning the leather.
  • Before crafting the design use a carbon paper to insert the shape on the surface. For burning the leather, make sure your leather belt is burn proof. Use a sharp blade or knife to craft the designs. But if you want to paint the shapes, you should use permanent color to paint. Make sure to use dark colors on the leather. Using lighter color can cause the leather look funky.
  • Practice hitting the top of the stamps with a mallet. Try out with few extra piece of leather. Determine how hard you can hit the stamp.
  • If the belt has holes already in them, go to the next step. If they don’t, make the holes manually with a hammer and bid.
  • Cut leathers to make the pockets for your tools. You can make them simple square type or fold type. It depends on your desire for the looks. Now decide how many pockets you want.
  • After making the pocket, stitch them with Nylon or Polyester thread. You can add a flap over the pocket or you can make it open mouth pockets. But for open mouth pockets, you will need hard and thick leather pieces. Roll the leather over the mouth of the pockets. Then stitch them with strong thread. The hard leather will make sure the pocket stays open. The flapped pockets are for storing nails, screws and other tiny equipment. Open mouth pockets are mostly use to hold heavier objects. The best combination has both flapped and open pouches in the tool belt. If you don’t want to add too many pockets in your waist, you can add the flapped small pocket over the open pocket. It will save space in your belt.
  • To make the flapped pocket wor, you need to add steel button to the flaps. You can also use magnetic locks but using them can cause irritation with nails and screws.
  • Attach the pockets to the belt using strings. When you attach the pouches in the belt, make sure to balance both sides. Don’t add them to your backside. You might need to sit while you work. If you add them in your back, you won’t be able to sit. Another thing, keep the most used tools pocket in you dominant hand side. If you are a lefty, add the largest pocket to your left.
  • Join the hammer holster to the belt, sew it with Nylon. Holsters are usually made of steel or wood. We will recommend you to buy the steel holster as it is much more durable and hard. Do not attach the holster in front of your leg. If you do so, you might get hurt or feel discomfort while walking. Always keep them on your side.
  • Cut leather into hook shapes. You can use them to hang some tool with your belt. Attaching them with super glue to the belt is wise. But if you are thinking of holding large tools with it, you should stitch them.
  • If you want to use the belt for a long time, you should add one or two adjustable buckles in the belt. It will help you to maintain the fitting of the belts even years after you make it.
  • Give the belt a proper finishing with sandpaper. Check the edges. They are often rough or uneven. But don’t sand the main surface. It may spoil the design and shape you added to your belt.

After you go through the whole process, you will have a well finished tool belt that has just the number of pockets you need.
